How To Put Bobbin In A Sewing Machine

When I was new to sewing, I used to face many problems in sewing. Everything was fine but the thread would tangle under the fabric while sewing. I used to try and then got frustrated, because I didn’t know why it was happening. Then my grandmaa would give give very simple solution to this. I was like what !! This was the problem. After that I came to know that bobbin should be loaded correctly. If you load the bobbin incorrectly then this type of problem will occur.

So, while preparing this blog this problems came to mind that I should write a proper method on how to Load bobbin in a sewing.

There are two types of bobbin systems that is Front loading bobbin and top loading bobbin.

What Is A Bobbin

Before going forward lets discuss “what is bobbin”? A bobbin is a type of spool on which the thread is spun.

What is The Diiference Between Front Loading And Top Loading Bobbin

Basically there are two types bobbin systems available in sewing machines. Front loading bobbin and top loading bobbin. Look at the pictures below.

Whatever the bobbin mechanism may be, in both systems the bobbin is inserted into a bobbin case inside the sewing machine.

Top Loading Bobbin

This is also called “drop in bobbin. Here the bobbin goes from the top, underneath the needle and presser foot. You can clearly see the bobbin from above. The top loading bobbin works on horizontal fully rotary hook. In this type of machine the shuttle hook rotates in a full circle around the stationary bobbin. The shuttle hook catches the thread when the needle is going back up through the fabric and the hook then carries the thread around the bobbin cage to form the stitch.

In Drop in bobbin, the bobbin case always stays inside the machine. You don’t have to remove it.

Front Loading Bobbin

Front loading sewing machines have a different spot for the bobbin. It is in hidden position. It is present behind the storage box. To see the bobbin you have to open the trap door. It has a removable metal bobbin case.

It works on a mechanism called “Vertical Oscillating Hook”. In this system, the shuttle hook instead of rotating in a full circle, oscillates back and forth. The hook picks up the upper thread from the needle and carries it down around the bottom of the bobbin cage. After the work done, the hook reverses its direction and returns to its original position.

In this system, the bobbin case removable. In order to insert or remove the bobbin, you have to remove the bobbin case.

You can not say which of the bobbin system is better or worse than the other. It may work differently for different people. Top loading bobbin systems are easier to load, so better for the beginner.

In front loading bobbins, you can adjust the bobbin thread tension. Because there is a little screw on the outside of the bobbin case to adjust the tension.

Here is the image of a drop in bobbin system. There is a cover over the bobbin. Look at the button to the right of the cover. Push the cover and the bobbin cover will pop up. Then grab the cover and remove it.

After removing the bobbin cover, you can clearly see the bobbin. Remove the empty bobbin, if you have it.

Top loading bobbin

Now take a new another bobbin. Now hold the bobbin like this, so that you can hold the thread in one hand and bobbin in another hand.

Now refer to the diagram as shown in your machine. Follow the arrow instruction.

Drop the bobbin inside the bobbin case holding the thread with another hand. Then the instruction says to move the thread in counterclockwise direction.

Top loading bobbin

Then the diagram shows the direction to move the thread under the plastic arm, then move it upwards. Keep like this.

Now hold the top thread and turn the hand wheel towards you. At this point, the top thread will pull up the bobbin thread. You can see the thread go over the bobbin. Once the needle is up, just pull the top thread and bring the bobbin thread up like this.
